One year ago this morning, the world shattered.
It's amazing how quickly we can put the pieces back together again.
Not completely, of course - there are still large cracks, deep wounds that will take a very long time to heal, and scars that never will. But all in all, at least for those of us who weren't that close to the attacks, life has returned to normalcy.
And then, a year later, the calendar reads the same as it did on that fateful day, and we are reminded that it's not really "normal" after all.
I've been hearing a lot this week about remembering. On Sunday morning as Nyx and I were having breakfast at my parents' house, the TV was showing vignettes of different people's reactions/thoughts/memories/impressions of September 11 and the days following. One that particularly struck me was about music, how it affects our psyches, how certain songs become tied in our memories to events, and whenever we hear them, we remember. If I hear "Hunter" by Dido today, I'm going to lose it, I just know. Music touches us in ways nothing else can, and can be a very powerful tool to help us deal with grief.
Which, says the fangirl, is why Gackt is still writing songs about Kami. ;_;
I'm listening to "juunigatsu no love song" a lot this week - the video for which is Gackt's tribute to the people of NYC - and getting weepy every time I do.
It's raining today, a gentle, steady, soaking rain - just what this desert needs for healing. It seems appropriate. One woman called in to the radio to tell how in her people's (Acoma/Laguna) beliefs, when it rains it means that someone has made it to heaven. I think that's a beautiful way to look at it.
I'm going to go find the disk with that video on it and watch it, then get on with my day.
